Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle Netflix Review

Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle is now streaming on Netflix, which is the sequel to last year's Godzilla: Monster Planet anime movie.

Similar to the first one, the sequel comes off as another disappointment.

While I found the animation and sound effects pleasing to the eyes and ears, it was the story that overall I felt was pretty lackluster as the movie starts off really, really, really slow. I actually watched the first seven minutes or so, and then skipped to around the 30-minute mark and didn't miss a beat. I then proceeded to skip to the end when the action started with Godzilla (finally). I'll say that as I was watching the movie, I found myself questioning why I was even watching it as nothing much was happening, so I was either going to stop watching or skip to the good parts, of which there are few.

I'll also add the Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle promo poster (see below) didn't help things as it seemingly teased Mecha-Godzilla as well as Mothra -- both of whom don't appear in the movie. I will say I did actually like what they did with Mecha-Godzilla, but I think they should have given fans what they wanted and expected by including a monster version (should have transformed at the end and fought Godzilla). Regarding Mothra, while there were "twins" in the movie - and they were singing or praying - no Mothra appeared. I know they are developing a third movie, Godzilla: Stareater, with King Ghidorah, but maybe Mothra or additional monsters will be appearing in that--and hopefully they don't wait until the last ten minutes for the action to kick in.

Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle is basically a free movie on Netflix, but there is not much going on until the end, and then it finishes just the way it started.

I give it 1.5 out of 5 stars.
