Yesterday, Cosmic Book News was the first to report that Vin Diesel had confirmed Groot in the Guardians of the Galaxy as well as mentioned Marvel Studios Phase 3 would see a "merging of brands."
While we don't think it's The Avengers merging with another Marvel film property (Sony's Spider-Man or Fox's X-Men), what we do think it actually refers to is a merging of Marvel Studios with their cosmic universe for Phase 3.
Presently, Marvel is launching Guardians of the Galaxy which is its own standalone movie set in a galaxy far, far away, but in the here and now. Thanos, the villain from The Avengers mid-credit scene, will be featured in Guardians of the Galaxy, just as we first told you about a year ago. While Ultron is the main villain of The Avengers 2, Kevin Feige did state that big plans are underway for Thanos, and regarding the Mad Titan's role in Guardians, it seems as if he will be more of a behind-the-scenes-mastermind with Lee Pace as Ronan taking the villain lead. So where does Thanos go from there? Enter Phase 3.
Vin Diesel in a recent interview let it be known that his initial talks with Marvel Studios were not about Groot, but about launching a new franchise in 2016. Katee Sackhoff confirmed that as well when she also let it be known that she is in talks with Marvel (speculated to be Ms. Marvel, another cosmic superhero). So if the talks work out, Vin Diesel will be launching a new character in 2016, and one involved in the "merging of brands."
Adam Warlock would definitely work as the character has a long history with Thanos which dates back to Jim Starlin and involves the Infinity Gems. Long story short: Adam Warlock was created to be the "perfect man," rebelled against his creators, and the first superhero he runs in to happens to be Thor before heading out to space, the cosmic universe.
Interestingly enough, in a recent interview both The Avengers director Joss Whedon and Clark Gregg (Agent Phil Coulson) stated they are big fans of Jim Starlin and Adam Warlock. Whedon even previously stated that his two favorite comic book storylines happen to be The Avengers Annual and The Thing Two-In-One that features the death of Adam Warlock.
Sounds like a "merging of brands" to me right there.
If not Adam Warlock; second guess: Black Bolt.
