Will The Avengers 2 Be Like Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back? "Not The Happy Ending" Says Joss Whedon
[[wysiwyg_imageupload:3004:]]We previously heard from Joss Whedon about his thoughts on the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy movie and director James Gunn, and now coming out of the Toronto Film Festival, the billion-dollar-plus director comments on The Avengers 2.
Whedon's The Avengers movie has already amassed $1.6 billion - and climbing - as audiences saw the Assemblers come together for the first time with Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye assembling against the likes of Loki and his alien army.
So with The Avengers 2, where will Joss Whedon be taking his Avengers? The director offers a few comments on the upcoming sequel, which almost sounds as if Part 2 will not be getting the happy ending audiences saw with the first — perhaps reminiscent of Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back.
Joss Whedon notes that as audiences saw with the first movie - a happy ending with the creation of the Avengers - that doesn't mean that's going to continue with the The Avengers 2, as that's only the start.
"The creation of the team is not the happy ending," Whedon said, reports Vancouver's 24H. "It is the beginning of something that is complex and difficult."
Joss Whedon goes on stating he is going to further explore the characters in The Avengers 2, but says that in doing so he's going to "twist the knife."
"Now I get to dig a little deeper. And maybe, while I'm digging, just twist that knife. And that's exciting for me," Whedon said.
[[wysiwyg_imageupload:3005:]]As Star Wars fans will note, Luke "saved the day" at the end of Episode 4 by firing the shot that destroyed the Death Star, but Empire Strikes Back saw - just as the title implies - Luke defeated at the hands of Darth Vader, his father, as well as Han Solo captured and encased in carbonite by the likes of Jabba the Hut.
The Star Wars comparison to Joss Whedon's The Avengers would be Tony Stark "firing the shot" that sealed the portal, so what will Whedon's "Empire Strikes Back" look like?
Will one of the Avengers meet their doom or will the Avengers find themselves disassembled?
The Avengers 2 assembles May 1, 2015 with Iron Man 3 on May 3, 2013, Thor: The Dark World on November 8, 2013, Captain America: Winter Soldier on April 4, 2014, and the Guardians of the Galaxy movie on August 1, 2014.
