What the D'ast? Ganymede
(Editor’s note: This is another in a series of irregularly-scheduled columns by Managing Editor Byron Brewer, mainly dealing with Marvel Cosmic and its many denizens. Mr. Brewer’s opinions do not necessarily reflect that of CosmicBookNews.com. He welcomes both raves and opposing views.)

One great thing about writing this column week after week and doing research through old comic books while also utilizing the Internet is the joy of reliving the adventures of my favorite Marvel Cosmic heroes.
Unfortunately, I did not get to do that in researching and writing about Ganymede, a femme fatale I discovered while doing a column on Jack of Hearts. I kinda knew Jack through his appearances in IronMan.But on Gamymede -- a “Cosmic QT,” as my friend Timelord would put it -- I knew squat.
Let’s learn about her together!
I know from several sources that Ganymede is a member of a race of warrior women known as the Spinsterhood. This group was formed with the sole purpose of destroying the being known as Tyrant.
It was in the distant past that the Devourer of Worlds, Galactus, created an immensely powerful living machine in his own image and bestowed upon it the Power Cosmic. This was Tyrant! However, unlike his creator, Tyrant developed a lust for tyranny (seems natural, eh, given the name?) and conquest that directly conflicted with Big G’s desire to do only what is necessary to survive. Tyrant's conquests aroused opposition in many forms, including the Spinsterhood. Eventually, Galactus learned of Tyrant's betrayal and engaged him in a titanic battle that unleashed energies that, according to Thanos, destroyed whole galaxies.
In the end, Galactus defeated Tyrant, stripped him of the bulk of his power and banished him to the farthest corners of the universe. The Spinsterhood mistakenly believed they were responsible for driving Tyrant away, when in fact it was his defeat and depowerment at the hands of Galactus that had done so, as Ganymede later learned.
As a child, Ganymede had been enrolled into cadet training that took place at a base originally constructed by the Eternals of Titan. It was hidden deep within one of the moons of Jupiter. She spent years training in myriad varieties of military tactics and combat styles. While at the academy, she developed a friendly rivalry with a fellow cadet, Perephone. Both warriors participated in the final campaign that was believed to have driven Tyrant from the galaxy. Following Tyrant’s “defeat.” the Spinsterhood placed its members in suspended animation chambers on their moon bases or, in Ganymede’s case, a chamber disguised as space debris floating in an asteroid belt.
After a centuries-long cyrogenic sleep, Ganymede awakened to find Tyrant had returned and his servants were kidnapping powerful cosmic entities in order to drain their powers for their master's own ends. Mistaking the Silver Surfer for a thrall of Tyrant, Ganymede attacked him and the two fought until Tyrant’s minions ambushed and kidnapped them both.
Ganymede, along with Tyrant's other hostages – the Surfer, Terrax, Morg, Beta Ray Bill, Gladiator and Jack of Hearts -- escaped their imprisonment and attacked Tyrant together, only to fail miserably. Galactus soon arrived and brought an end to the battle.
After that, those involved in the incident went their separate ways except for Ganymede, who decided to stay with Jack of Hearts to help nurse him back to health after a selfless sacrifice that freed his fellow captives. Ganymede and Jack of Hearts had a few adventures together, wherein they struck up a romantic relationship – at least in Jack’s mind.
Ganymede had extensive experience in armed an unarmed combat. Her speed, resilience and reaction time were all superhuman; she could press 50 tons. Ganymede was able to survive unprotected in extreme environments, including outer space. She could also instantly comprehend alien languages.
Jack of Hearts would later become a member of the Avengers, but Ganymede has been absent from the Cosmic canvas for a number of years.
I think it is about time to see a return of this colorful trio: Gamymede, Jack of Hearts and Tyrant! What say you, True Believer?
