December 25th sees the premiere of Tim Burton's Big Eyes, and while doing press for the film, Burton spoke about his previous movies including Batman and Batman Returns.
Burton remarked he was glad the internet wasn't around back then because "we would have been really murdered," and noted even without the internet "there was a lot of negativity and alarm" surrounding the casting of Michael Keaton as Batman.
Burton says they went with Keaton as their choice for Batman based on the look in his eyes and what was going in internally with the actor, even though he wasn't a big guy like Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Tim Burton also mentions Batman Returns and that it upset McDonalds because the Penguin had this black ooze coming out of his mouth. "We can’t sell Happy Meals with that!" Burton remarked. Burton also says the studio wanted the additional Batman films to be "family friendly" and didn't want him back for additional movies.
