[[wysiwyg_imageupload:4570:]]J.J. Abrams recently premiered two teaser trailers for Star Trek Into Darkness with a full trailer coming up attached to the December 14th premiere of the non-IMAX viewings of the Hobbit, with still nine minutes more of IMAX footage showing with The Hobbit IMAX.
A screening for the full trailer (non-IMAX) was shown recently in Austin, Texas revealing some spoilers (via TrekMovie).
• The full Star Trek Into Darkness trailer indicates the hands against glass scene is actually Spock and Benedict Cumberbatch. If he’s Sybock… Well, kudos
• That said, Benedict Cumberbatch does NOT have Vulcan ears. Hands against glass scene seems to be Cumberbatch in the brig
• Trailer opens with Pike voice over, telling Kirk he has courage but no humility, and someday that will get him and his crew killed
• Oh yeah: there’s space stuff in the full Star Trek trailer. Space combat. Guy in a space suit zooming around.
• Benedict Cumberbatch was definitely shown in some sort of brig
• Chekov (Anton Yelchin) appears in a red tunic (instead of his regular gold tunic)
• Someone wears a EVA space suit with similar design to the one used in Star Trek: The Motion Picture
[[wysiwyg_imageupload:4571:]]With that description it seems J.J. Abrams was playing with us a bit in the teaser trailer as he featured a scene similar to Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan with Spock's death, which was most likely too obvious to be actually featured in the new movie.
However, the teaser trailer also may have revealed a Federation funeral - and then the stuff hits the fan - and it's interesting to note that Checkov is wearing a "Red Shirt."
We still don't know who Benedict Cumberbatch is, with the leading contenders as to his identity being Khan, Gary Mitchell and Garth of Izar. Regarding Gary Mitchell, he recently appeared in a movie prequel comic book that is canon, where he received a phaser blast by Kirk, with his coffin getting jettisoned to space. Could Cumberbatch be returning out of the darkness of "death?"
Speaking of darkness, the original Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan trailer hinted more toward Cumberbatch being Khan, with talk of darkness and revenge.
And then there is Garth of Izar, the shapeshifting insane captain, who meets up with the Enterprise while on an insane asylum prison planet. Recently, Chris Pine seemed to suggest that Cumberbatch undergoes some sort of transformation. Shape-shifting?
As we see from all the speculations as well as the trailers, J.J. Abrams is doing a masterful job keeping Benedict Cumberbatch's identity a secret. The teaser trailers don't reveal much and it appears the full trailer doesn't as well. Will the IMAX footage?
It's even been put forth that the first movie poster doesn't feature Benedict Cumberbatch -- but Karl Urban.
Star Trek Into Darkness has a May 17th, 2013 release date in 3D, is directed by J.J. Abrams and stars Chris Pine as Capt. James T. Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, Karl Urban as Leonard "Bones" McCoy, Zoe Saldana as Nyota Uhura, Simon Pegg as Scotty, Anton Yelchin as Pavel Chekov, John Cho as Hikaru Sulu and Benedict Cumberbatch as an unnamed villain.
