Gotta love the internet.
The latest controversy to surround DC Comics - on top of Orson Scott Card writing Superman, Ben Affleck as Batman, and Batwoman "not" getting married - is an open talent search contest that happens to feature a scene depicting Harley Quinn in a bathtub getting ready to off herself.
DC Comics is launching a new Harley Quinn series by the husband and wife team of Jimmy Palmiotti and Amanda Connors which will feature one page drawn by a fan.
DC announced the contest on their official blog including the panels to be drawn. Here is the panel in question that is causing the uproar:
Harley sitting naked in a bathtub with toasters, blow dryers, blenders, appliances all dangling above the bathtub and she has a cord that will release them all. We are watching the moment before the inevitable death. Her expression is one of “oh well, guess that’s it for me” and she has resigned herself to the moment that is going to happen.
My guess is that all these people online complaining are obviously not comic book readers; after all, it IS Harley Quinn we are talking about. Or is it just because she happens to be female? Hmmm...
Harley Quinn is the female equivalent of The Joker, meaning she's a total psycho. So if you are familiar with the character, is this really that big of a deal or a surprise?
I suppose it could be argued that because it's an "Open Talent Search" that it's done in "poor" taste - you might have me there - but, I'm doubting Palmiotti and Connor's Harley Quinn is an all ages comic book to begin with.
Begs the question: Do we need parental advisory notices on everything, folks?
