With a weekend gross of almost $40 million, it's been announced that a sequel for The Purge is in development.
Producer Jason Blum announced the news via his Twitter for the sequel..
"The Purge 2 is in development," Blum tweeted.
The Purge debuted with a $37.5 million opening gross that shocked industry analysts, coming in at first place for the weekend's box office.
It's been stated the movie's success is in part due to the positive buzz with a successful trailer and promotional campaign preceding the movie as well as the added factor of the weather, with there being so much rain around the country.
The film stars Ethan Hawke and sees his family held hostage for harboring the target of a murderous syndicate during "the Purge," a 12-hour period in which any and all crime is legalized.
With a budget of only $3 million it's no wonder Universal is moving forward with the sequel.
The Purge directed by James DeMonaco is currently in theaters.
CBN's own Lawrence Napoli described The Purge in his review as "an interesting film that finds more fans with members of the audience who are more seasoned and are politically and socially engaged."
