With Star Trek 3 looking to coincide with the franchise's 50th Anniversary in 2016 it was recently learned that both Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are coming back to write the third movie with J.J. Abrams on board as producer.
Earlier it was also rumored that Jon Chu was up to direct Star Trek 3, which has been shot down by the director's reps, in addition to the fact that it doesn't make too much sense due to the fact Chu will be directing G.I. Joe 3.
Now a new name has surfaced to direct Star Trek 3, and it's Ruper Wyatt of Rise of the Planet of the Apes fame.
Cinematallica has it that Ruper Wyatt is the current frontrunner to direct Star Trek 3 stating Wyatt is a "virtual lock."
Personally, I am still sticking with J.J. Abrams directing Star Trek 3 as a recent report surfaced stating Star Wars is beginning production this month and not waiting until 2014, which may give Abrams enough time to do the third Trek movie.
It was also reported that Damon Lindelof will not be involved with writing Star Trek 3 as well.
Rupert Wyatt has been a hot commodity in Hollywood since his sleeper hit Rise of the Planet of the Apes went on to make over $481 million at the box office as well as spawning the sequel, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, with Matt Reeves at the helm.
