A new batch of Star Wars rumors has hit the net which includes mention that screenwriter Michael Arndt is well on his way to working on Star Wars: Episode VIII.
StarWars7News.com has it that Arndt wasn't fired (according to some rumors) from Star Wars: Episode VII, but was moved over to Episode VIII when Abrams wanted to change the direction of the script to better feature the original actors.
It's also mentioned that the new characters for the Star Wars movies will be based on the extended universe (i.e. not canon) Star Wars characters, but will use different names.
It's said Luke Skywalker will have a wife who is similar to Mara Jade, but will have a different name. Mara Jade has red hair, green eyes, an attitude etc.
It's an interesting notion if they do go with a wife for Skywalker as I pretty much thought the Jedi don't marry (much like the Knights Templar which seem to be Lucas' inspiration for the Jedi; there is even the Inquisitor who is hunting down the last of the Jedi in the new Star Wars: Rebels animated series, which seems a reference to the Inquisition.). Who knows? Maybe they won't be "married" (it would be a shame to have all that midi-chlorian goodness go to waste with no children).
Likewise, giving the Star Wars characters new names obviously enables them to be just that - new, and they don't have to worry about being bogged down in continuity, which actually isn't even a apart of the Star Wars movie canon in the first place as Lucas and the novel writers have gone on record stating as such.
There is probably also the added fact that royalty payments might be involved if they do use existing characters created from the novels, comics etc.
"Star Wars: Episode VII" has a December 18, 2015 release.
