Z Nation starts three years after the zombie virus has gutted the country, when a team ofeveryday heroes must transport the only known survivor of the plague from New York to California, where the last functioning viral lab waits for his blood. Although the antibodies he carries are the world’s last, best hope for a vaccine, he hides a dark secret that threatens them all. With humankind’s survival at stake, the ragtag band embarks on a journey of survival across three thousand miles of rusted-out post-apocalyptic America.
Prior to the zombie apocalypse, Lt. Mark Hammond was one of the most respected members of the elite Delta Force. A military man to the core, Hammond will do whatever it takes to ensure a possible cure for the zombie virus is found. We mean anything.
Before the zombie apocalypse, Charles Garnett was with the National Guard based out of Georgia. Where the end of the world might take a military man – tough, disciplined, a survivor – and harden them, Garnett has maintained a compassionate demeanor and employs a cool logic. Doesn’t mean he’s not dangerous, though.
Once upon a time there was a young man named Simon Cruller. Private First Class Simon Cruller, that is. Stationed at a remote NSA listening post in the Arctic, he was spared from the zombie apocalypse. But his network of surveillance cameras and listening equipment captured everything. And that is the origin story of how Simon became Citizen Z.
Citizen Z is a beacon to anyone that can hear it; A calming voice in a landscape of disaster, a reason to laugh, a focal point of escape. He broadcasts over any means of transmission he can, quick with a joke and steeped in hope that one day the world will go back to the way it was.
Roberta Warren is ex-National guard and all survivor. Like many other survivors of the zombie apocalypse, Warren lost nearly everything and everyone that mattered to her. Might that explain the tough-as-nails approach? Probably.
Murphy – just Murphy – was doing time for white collar crime when the zombie apocalypse broke out. The government, desperate for a cure for the zombie virus, started experimenting on prisoners. That’s when Murphy got bitten. Well, mauled really, by a horde of the undead. But he survived. That may mean Murphy is the key to a cure, and restoring the world to a semblance of what it used to be. But did humanity’s salvation have to be in the form of such a complete and total jerk?
Mack Thompson defines All-American. Good looking, killer smile, nice guy, college athlete, eyes for one girl. Once the apocalypse hit….well, Mack really hasn’t changed that much. Except all that athleticism has come in handy with killing zombies.
Addison “Addy” Carver seemingly defied the odds by surviving the zombie apocalypse. Before the world went to hell, people would describe her as sensitive, “with the soul of an artist.” When push came to shove, she had the guts of a killer. She can take care of herself, thank you very much.
Steven Beck – or “Doc” as everyone knows him – isn’t actually a doctor. He’s just self-taught with a really, really strong stomach. Doc’s an ex-addict who is rough (really rough) around the edges, but a stand-up guy once you get to know him.
Cassandra’s past is shrouded in mystery. There’s trauma there, but the nature of it is unknown. Still, she’s managed to survive the end of the world. Whether her quiet strength comes from a time before the zombie apocalypse is still unknown.
Here’s what you need to know about 10K (or really, all 10K will tell you): He doesn’t talk a lot. He’s good with a gun. He loves killing zombies. And he’s keeping track of how many he’s taken out. Ten thousand is his goal (hence the name). He’s well on his way there.
