I guess we can say that James Gunn is officially on as director, as Joss Whedon talks about what Gunn is bringing to the table as well as some talk on the script.
The Guardians of the Galaxy movie features a rag-tag group of space adventurers, led by Star-Lord, doing just at the title implies — guarding the galaxy. Based on the 2008 comic book of the same name by Dan Abnett, Andy Lanning and Brad Walker, Guardians of the Galaxy featured lesser known Marvel Characters, but still considered fan-favorites among the Marvel Cosmic crowd. Rocket Raccoon, Groot, Drax The Destroyer, Gamora and Star-Lord were first revealed through concept art at the recent San Diego Comic-Con. It's also rumored that Adam Warlock and the Magus will be featured, and Cosmic Book News is hoping for a Richard Rider Nova and Wendell Vaughn Quasar appearance, too.
[[wysiwyg_imageupload:2991:]]With such a diverse mix of characters compared to what audiences are used to with The Avengers, Whedon admits that even he was surprised by their use, especially Rocket Raccoon, but once James Gunn was onboard, everything thereafter sounded alright.
"James is what makes me think it will work," Whedon told MTV News. "I myself was sort of like, 'Well, I liked Rocket Raccoon as a kid, but I'm not sure how that plays [to a wider audience].' And then they said, 'Well, we're thinking about using James Gunn.' And I said, 'Oh, then no, you're fine.' He is so off the wall, and so crazy, but so smart, such a craftsman and he builds from his heart. He loves the raccoon. Needs the raccoon."
Based on those statements, I would say Whedon hasn't read the DnA's latest Guardians of the Galaxy run, but from the sounds of it at least James Gunn has, and Whedon mentions it's a "twisted take."
"He has a very twisted take on it, but it all comes from a real love for the material. It's going to be hard for the humans to keep up. I know he's going to come from left field and I'm going to go, 'What?' And then, 'Of course, why didn't I think of that?' And then I'm going to beat him!" Whedon said.
Whedon acknowledges that James Gunn is the right man to direct the Guardians of the Galaxy movie as his previous films proved just that.
"This is the guy who wrote 'The Specials.' People don't understand how influential that movie was about heroes, about taking heroes and making them mundane. And [he directed] 'Super."
James Gunn will be attending the upcoming MorrisonCon at the end of the month, with Cosmic fans expecting some more Guardians of the Galaxy movie news. Cosmic Book News will be sure to keep you updated.
