Iron Man 3: Mandarin's Rings May Not Be Cosmic

The first trailer for Iron Man 3 not only revealed the Captain America tattoo on the back of the Mandarin's neck, but also the fabled ten "magic" rings ie the Ten Rings of Power.

The Mandarin found the rings in a spaceship, rings that powered the vessel's engines, with each ring giving the Mandarin a unique power.

However, it doesn't seem as if the Mandarin, played by Ben Kingsley, in Iron Man 3 will be following this same route.

Marvel Studios producer and president Kevin Feige let it be known that the rings would not have the same backstory as the comics and would not feature ice rays and fire beams (via EW).

But what mystical power do they contain of their own? Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said this version of the Mandarin will have a different backstory from the comics, in which he was a Chinese exile who discovers a crashed alien ship and harnesses the power of the 10 rings aboard it to unleash havoc on the world.

While it could be they simply represent some form of status quo for the Mandarin, we can't help but think Marvel Studios has something else up their sleeve -- perhaps they are more tech-based?

Iron Man 3 blasts off May 3rd, 2013 directed by Shane Black and starring Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Gwyneth Paltrow and Don Cheadle.
