This past weekend saw the opening for Insidious 2 come close to breaking records for the month of September, so with that it comes as no surprise that Sony has green lit "Insidious 3."
Numerous Hollywood trade sites are reporting Insidious and Insidious: Chapter 2 screenwriter Leigh Whannell will be returning for the third film.
It's unknown if James Wan will be returning for "Insidious 3" as no mention of the director was made. It's thought Wan may not be coming back or is still in talks with the studio.
The Friday the 13th weekend premiere for Insidious 2 surpassed expectations bringing in $41 million giving it not only the second-best opening for any film in September (Hotel Transylvania opened with $43.5 million in 2012), but also the second-highest grossing horror film for 2013 trailing The Conjuring ($41.9 million in July also directed by Wan).
Insidious 2, which only cost $5 million to produce, also seems to be a hit with audiences as Rotten Tomatoes has it listed favorably with a 72% positive rating from fans.
James Wan is currently filming Fast & Furious 7 and also directed the original Saw.
"Insidious 2" is currently in theaters.
