Guardians of the Galaxy Review ****NON-SPOILERS****
Guardians of the Galaxy is what it is supposed to be. What I mean by that is that in much like the comic book world, the cosmic side of things for Marvel is always just a little off-standish. It doesn't directly coincide with the rest of what happens on Earth. Happily, this is the approach here. To me, this was a Cosmic Movie.
From the characters of our main five (Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Groot, and Rocket) to our antagonists (Ronan the Accuser, Nebula, and the slow-burn on Thanos for all Marvel movies), everybody is pitch perfect. The rhythm of the film keeps it moving nicely. Not one scene feels like it overstays its welcome. To this point, the script also feels a bit un-Disney-like but I'm going to attribute that to Gunn and Perlman's sensibilities on the screenplay. Honestly, a couple cursewords should slip out in these matters. As for the characters, every one has its moment to shine. You will love Groot by the end of the movie. Best of them still might be Yondu's. Listen for his whistle, folks. However, this "almost Half of Dirty Dozen" shines when they work together.
The movie focuses on Ronan's bargaining with Thanos for the annihilation of Xandar. Ronan has been going around killing Xandarian outposts because he is a religious zealot that believes the Xandarians are in need of some "cleansing". The Kree do not endorse Ronan but also won't help reign him in. Multiple characters are after , for all intents and purposes, the Power Gem or "Infinity Stone". Starlord retrieves it to start the movie and....... that would be giving it all away.
This is very much an origin story without the clunkiness of one. The way the characters meet each other is very organic and doesn't fight you to logistically defy it. Plenty of Easter Eggs from the telepathic "enemy" of Rocket to some characters that use Judgement tying into the Infinity Stones.
Much like Drax with metaphors, this movie won't go over your head. From Star-Lord's pop-culture references and cockiness, Rocket's ingenuity and craftiness , to Groot's endearing empathy and quite capable violence, this film will make your root for it.
I enjoyed this movie and I would gladly pay full price of admission without reservation. 5/5 Stars- Easily the best Marvel movie to date.
Got searched by security for cell phones. Magic Wand'd and everything. High security for a movie but I get it. No mid or end-credit scenes. Just the movie.
To be fair, Gamora was left as a damsel in distress for StarLord. She's still deadly as all-get-out but is she "the Deadliest Woman in the Galaxy" after you see this? I'm not sure it's not Nebula that holds that title. But it is the movie version so everything with a grain of salt, says I.
Looking forward to chatting about all those Xandarians after you all see it. I'm sure some of you will have a lot to say. Enjoyed the nod to the old James Bond films at the end. However, if you've been paying attention to SDCC announcements, then you know that they've already greenlit "Guardians of the Galaxy- War of Kings". Which will lead to Inhumans.
"Guardians of the Galaxy" has an August 1, 2014 release.
