Here is a quick update via THR on the Green Lantern movie that opened today.
Looks like GL is projected to at least hit the $20 million mark, which includes $3.35 million from the midnight showings.
Update 3:07pm Eastern: Latest estimates say 21.6 million.
That should give GL a weekend opening of around $57-60 million.
Reviews have generally frowned upon Green Lantern, but if it does alright at the box office, I assume the movie studio could care less (more or less, maybe).
Pirates Of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, starring Johnny Depp, hasn't been well received, but is on track to become one of Disney's all time grossing movies. Not saying this applies to GL; just saying poor reviews don't necessarily equal poor ticket sales. The major factor for Pirates is International movie sales that have been booming due to foreign countries appeal to 3D, something which Green Lantern has in common.
To put GL's sales for opening weekend in perspective with the two previous super hero movies, it seems similar.
Thor came in at $65 million, with X-Men: First Class at $55.1 million.
However, Green Lantern cost $300 million to make.
Keep in mind the numbers are just estimates.
