Legendary creator George Perez has signed exclusively with BOOM! Studios.
He'll be taking his artistic and writing skills there with a forthcoming announcement at this September's Baltimore Comic-Con.
The announcement isn't really all too surprising as Perez recently parted ways with DC Comics over the direction of the New 52 Superman where he blamed the movie industry for interference.
Now in an interview with CBR, George Perez cites as one of his reasons for leaving both Marvel and DC, the corporate control.
From what I can see, it's not the new that either company wants now, it's the familiar. Why gamble with an unknown property when another Batman or Avengers title might be more of a sure thing? Fewer and fewer final decisions are made at the editorial level. Warner and Disney think they can do it all better -- and they're the ones with control and money.
Perez continued with the reasons why BOOM! Studios is a good fit.
When I was approached by BOOM!, they offered me a chance to work on something I wanted to do, something they hoped would rekindle the creative spark that I felt was being squelched these past few years. I was also offered something that was a bit unique -- an employment contract, meaning I would actually receive all benefits of being an employee with tax withholding and medical benefits. To be fair, I was receiving medical benefits at the Big Two as well, but it was frightfully expensive and required full exclusivity. BOOM!'s package is a little more flexible regarding exclusivity -- and a good deal cheaper.
Also, I liked talking with Ross, Filip, Matt and the whole BOOM! editorial staff. These guys love comics with a passion and it really felt like I had stepped back in time, back to the days when editors and creators were the main architects of the stories presented on the multi-colored pages we call comics. They made me feel like a creator again.
Perez also stated that in addition to the Baltimore Comic-Con announcement of a new creative-driven series, he will be doing various art chores for the BOOM! titles including covers and pin-ups.
