Tragedy struck last night in Aurora, Colorado after the opening of The Dark Knight Rises when an armed gunman threw explosives and began shooting into a crowd.
James Holmes, 24, has been apprehended, and is said to have lived near the theater.
According to reports, Holmes, wearing a gas mask, entered the Denver suburban theater and launched a gas canister and began firing his gun into the crowd at Theater #9 in Aurora, Colorado.
Police said Holmes offered no resistance when arrested and they found an AK type rifle, a shotgun and two handguns used by Holmes.
While investigating Holmes' apartment, the Police discovered it was booby trapped, had disturbing images and sophisticated devices. The police evacuated buildings in the surrounding vicinity.
Among the injured included a 3 month old infant.
Apparently at the time of the shooting, a gun battle was taking place within The Dark Knight Rises movie which added to the chaos.
Throughout the ordeal fans took to various social networks such as YouTube and Twitter to report on the events and offer condolences.
Warner Bros. released the following statement, "Warner Bros. is deeply saddened to learn about this shocking incident. We extend our sincere sympathies to the families and loved ones of the victims at this tragic time."
President Obama has said he is shocked and saddened by what took place and offered his support for the victims' families.
"As we do when confronted by moments of darkness and challenge, we must now come together as one American family," Obama said
Aurora, Colorado is about 13 miles from Littleton, Colorado, the site of the Columbine High School massacre that occurred on April 20th, 1999.
