We've seen all the set photos and video, now speaking with Empire Magazine, Tom Hardy gives us a behind the scenes take on the Cops. Vs. Mercenaries riot from The Dark Knight Rises.

The battle sees 1000 extras play the "good guys vs bad guys" role, with Tom Hardy and Christian Bale caught in the middle as their respective characters, Bane and Batman.

"I'm exhausted. Every bone in my body is aching from training and now it’s the big fight scene. So it’s suck it up! Suck it up!” Hardy tells Empire Magazine.

"It’s very overwhelming," Hardy continues. "When you’re training in a rehearsal room you go, 'Okay, I have a contact with seven people. This guy I chin, this one I slip and I punch, this one I pick up and suplex, this guy I kick in the face, and this one, he stops a hammer with his head.' And then I meet Batman. That’s all right in a rehearsal room, but then you add 1,000 people that are all dressed the same as the seven you’re supposed to hit – 'cause they’re all police officers – and I don’t know where my police officers are. But the stuntmaster’s like, 'Don’t worry. They will find you.'"

And on the physical prowess of Bane and The Dark Knight Rises, director Christopher Nolan offers up the following on just why the character of Bane was chosen.

"With Bane, we are looking to give Batman a physical challenge that he hasn’t had before," Nolan stated to Empire. "With our choice of villain and with our choice of story we’re testing Batman both physically as well as mentally. Also, in terms of finishing our story and increasing its scope, we were trying to craft an epic, so the physicality of the film became very important."

The latest issue of Empire Magazine is currently available at Newsstands beginning November 24th.

The Dark Knight Rises hits theaters July 20th, 2012 and is directed by Christopher Nolan starring Christian Bale as Batman, Tom Hardy as Bane, Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Gary Oldman as Commissioner Gordon, Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox, Michael Cain as Alfred, Juno Temple and Josh Pence as a young Ra's al Ghul.
