EW scores the pic and an interview with director Joe Johnston.
Among the highlights, Johnston mentions how Steve Rogers is transformed on the outside from frail 98 lb. weakling, to the perfect human specimen - but not changed on the inside.
Johnston also comments on the controversial(?) decision to drop the "Captain America" from the film for certain international audiences and says if it was up to him, he would go with "Captain America," as that is what it is called. However, he made it a point to say the movie was not going to be a "flag waver" when asked about the political aspects of the comic books.
"It’s about a guy who wants to do the right thing, and that transcends all nationalities and borders. He’s going to do the right thing no matter what flag is on his chest," Johnston told EW.
Regarding the upcoming The Avengers movie, Johnston informs us he didn't have to worry much about what happens in his movie as Captain America: First Avenger takes place before.
When asked about all the characters in The Avengers and as being a fan what would he expect, Johnston states there should be some inner conflict among the heroes.
"The fact that they are all so different is what will make it exciting. You bring these elements together and they all have different outlooks and come from different worlds. I think there is an opportunity for conflict within the group. There’s gotta be. It’s not the Boy Scouts. [Laughs] There’s going to be rivalry and certain amount of infighting and conflict. Like I say I’m going to be there as an audience member like anybody else.," said Johnston.
Joe Johnston even remarks on comparing Superman to his Steve Rogers, when asked about relating to super heroes:
"Movies like that are a lot harder to do, because how you make someone like that vulnerable? Someone like Superman. I don’t know if that’s the best example, but it’s certainly the one that comes to mind. How do you make a guy who is invincible seem real? Kryptonite, that is his one weakness, but I don’t know. It’s much easier with a guy like Steve Rogers who has all kinds of built in weaknesses, because of who he was and how he grew up."
Captain America: First Avenger opens July 22nd 2011 starring Chris Evans as Captain America/Steve Rogers and Hugo Weaving as the Red Skull.
