Beating the previous high of 16.11 million viewers for its fourth-season premiere a year ago, The Walking Dead Season 5 raked in 17.3 million viewers.
Last night also saw The Walking Dead beat its ratings in the coveted 18-49 demographic with a whopping 8.7, from a previous high of 8.2.
The 8.7 (about 11 million) gives The Walking Dead the top rated entertainment show this year.
Look for higher ratings once DVR viewings are factored in.
The success of The Walking Dead is also leading to a spinoff series, with the new series already in development.
The Walking Dead airs Sundays at 9pm ET on AMC.
