Carl Gregg Talks Captain Marvel Agent Coulson

The Captain Marvel film marks Clark Gregg's return to the MCU, as back during The Avengers movie Agent Coulson met his demise at the hands of the diabolical Loki.

Carl Gregg then resurfaced in Marvel TV and ABC's Agents of SHIELD series, which unfortunately has never been recognized by Kevin Feige's MCU movies.

Captain Marvel actually takes place prior to The Avengers - set in the 90s - so no mention obviously will made of what went down with Coulson and the Avengers.

Clark Gregg says he likes the idea of visiting Coulson's past.

“There was something really special about going back to the early days when he was just kind of coming up the ranks,” Clark Gregg tells EW. “I had to take innocence workshops and go back to when he was a little less crusty and jaded!”

Gregg offers up what Coulson will be like when we see him back in the 90s.

“He’s a relatively new S.H.I.E.L.D. agent who is obsessed with MC Hammer and dresses just like him, and it makes Director Fury so angry,” Clark Gregg quips. “The genie pants don’t really go with the Armani.”

The article notes Captain Marvel will include the first meeting between Phil Coulson and Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury. Similar to his Coulson, Fury is a low level bureaucrat within S.H.I.E.L.D. as well, and Fury has both of his eyes.

[It's a] meet-cute moment," Gregg says with a laugh. “[Although] I don’t think Sam will put it that way.”

Marvel will be using special de-aging technology to make both Clark Gregg and Samuel L. Jackson look 25 years younger.

"When I got the call saying they wanted to do this and have Coulson be in this ‘90s world, they said, ‘Do you have a trainer?’" Gregg recalls, with the article noting he joked about sucking up to the visual effects team in the hope that they’ll make him look good. “People don’t know this but Robert Downey is actually 71. So they’ve been doing that for him in all of these movies.”

Regarding Agents of SHIELD, Season 6 will come out next Summer following the events of both Captain Marvel and The Avengers 4.

Captain Marvel lands March 8, 2019.
