Since I discovered the Boom! Studios Farscape comics not long ago, I’ve been snapping them up and going through them like a kid with candy. I love the fact that they are filling in continuity gaps between the show and the comics and with the D’Argo-focused series of limited series, some gaps in the original television show’s continuity.
That being said, so far D’Argo’s Quest has been the weakest of the Farscape comics I’ve read.
While the story isn’t by any means a bad one, it has lacked the action I’ve come to expect of Farscape and specifically, the excitement Keith Decandido has shown me he’s capable of providing. This last issue of D’Argo’s Quest, the penultimate chapter of the series, was quite frankly a bit boring. It’s nothing but talking heads until the last few pages, and there are several spots where gratuitous full-page panels seem designed only to fill space.
The last two pages of the issue gave us a hint of what I’d normally expect from these comics, and hopefully the last issue will redeem this limited series.
As always, Caleb Cleverland’s art kept the book from being a complete let down. He doesn’t quite capture the feel of that Farscape as a whole has, but he is quite adept at recreating the facial expressions and body language of the characters which is no small feat considering many of them first appeared in live action played by skilled character actors.
Overall, if you are a fan of Farscape and a completist pick this up. If you’re casually interested, I wouldn’t recommend this as a jumping in point to explore the Farscape universe.
