What the D'ast? Devos the Devastator

(Editor’s note: This is another in a series of irregularly-scheduled columns by Managing Editor Byron Brewer, mainly dealing with Marvel Cosmic and its many denizens. Mr. Brewer’s opinions do not necessarily reflect that of He welcomes both raves and opposing views.)

Originally one of the great cosmic foes from Fantastic Four, Devos the Devastator is an extraterrestrial vigilante dedicated (byronically) to bringing peace to the universe. However, he holds the rather warped view that this can only be done by destroying anyone who he deems a threat to galactic peace, therefore killing everyone capable of waging war!

While Devos is willing to make alliances with others in order to further his goal of peace, he inevitably betrays his allies as they too, he remembers, are capable of waging war.

In FF #359, Devos battled Reed Richards & Co. and then fled to his escape craft while his starship was destroyed. He then encountered and joined forces with Paibok the Power Skrull, watching the alien alter the genetic structure of fellow Skrull Lyja the Laserfist (coming soon in a column of her own, I promise). The trio arrived on Earth and attacked the Human Torch in New York City.

The name of Devos’ homeworld has been lost in antiquity, but Nova Corps files reveal that he was once the subject of a government experiment similar to the Super-Solder Project that produced Captain America. Driven by an inner rage, Devos became his world’s foremost warrior and so was selected to have his natural physical capabilities heightened and to be fitted with multi-functional armor to make him an engine of destruction. He began his peacekeeping mission, rumor has it, with his homeworld! Devos’ most notable act to date is probably his destruction of the Skrull Throneworld, throwing the Skrull Empire into a civil war.

Devos’ armor is highly impervious to damage and contains a powered exoskeleton that can temporarily enhance Devos's physical strength to superhuman levels. The suit is equipped with an energy blaster with automated targeting devices mounted on the right shoulder. It can fire projectiles with bazooka force from either shoulder. It can shoot poison gas and frost grenades from a left wrist device. It can emit electrical shock from the outer surface of the battle-suit. The armor is equipped with sophisticated internal sensor systems. The helmet is designed to permit Devos to see into otherwise invisible portions of the spectrum. The helmet also contains a “luminator” which emits a blinding light.

During the Annihilation War in the mini Ronan, Devos is attacked by Talos the Untamed and later captured by Glorian. Devos confers with Talos, who realizes that Glorian was the one-time pupil of the Shaper of Worlds. When the planet is overrun by the Annihilation Wave, Glorian is distracted, releasing both Devos and Talos. The Kree accuser Ronan orders the two of them to the spaceport to get off-planet with any other survivors.

During the Realm of Kings event, Devos and his cybernetic warriors attack the Kree, knowing it was their ruler, the Inhuman Black Bolt, who was responsible for creating the Fault, a rip in space and time. Devos is defeated by a Gorgon-led army of Inhuman Elite and Kree military along with the visiting Mighty Avengers.

As ever, to the best of my knowledge, Devos continues to wander the spaceways, waging his peculiar brand of preventative peacekeeping.
