The Wayback Machine: Land of the Giants (1968)

I never liked Land of the Giants.

I loved superstar producer Irwin Allen's other sci-fi farces, but the big people on the strange world with the little people with wiggling legs in their hands really didn't appeal to me.

And Fitzhugh made a poor Dr. Smith (Lost in Space).

There was really no cool tech like the Jupiter 2 or the Robot or cool characters like Captain Crane or Will Robinson to like or to laugh at. Perhaps because Giants was a replacement for Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, one of my all-time favorites, cast a shadow on it, but I don't think so.

It was just generally el stinko!

But let's go down the hallway of the CBN offices, dial up the ol' Wayback Machine to 1968 and take a gander at this product.

Land of the Giants was produced by Allen as a replacement for Voyage, which got the rug pulled out from under it by ABC . (Boo!)

Taking place in the then-future year 1983, the tale revolves around the crew and passengers of the sub-orbital transport spaceship Spindrift which, in a strange space storm, is transported to a parallel Earth where everything is 12 times their terran size!

There's a lot of government goings-on around this planet, but there are very few details given. A few alliances are made between the Earthers and different giants from time to time, but the government as a whole seems to be more of a totalitarian nature. It really varies from show to show, but that was a trademark in all Allen programs. Just look at Time Tunnel, or even Lost in Space.

Lost in Space, Time Tunnel and Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea were very enjoyable for what they were. There's nothing enjoyable about Land of the Giants, not even the dog!

This Gulliver's Travels wanna-be spun off as a real loser and was mercifully put out its misery March 1970.

There is little else to be said here, except that Fitzhugh will always be a poor man's Dr. Zachary Smith.

I hope I have a better use of the Wayback Machine next time around.
