TV Review: Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H. -- "Red Rover"
There is some great humor and fantastic animation in the latest episode of Disney XD’s Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H., but little else.
You would think that with a heavyweight villain such as Doctor Doom on board, there would be some seriousness to the script. But really the stars of this episode are Red Hulk, Devil Dinosaur and the unique love/hate relationship between the two. (Think the Thing and the Torch from the FF.)
Red Hulk is tired of the dino burying him like a bone every morning, which Rick Jones claims is the reptile’s unique way of expressing his love for the crimson brute. Red Hulk decides to rid Vista Verde of the beast and several comic attempts to give Devil Dinosaur away ensue. Especially funny is the museum segment.
Eventually, like a distraught dog owner, Red Hulk releases Devil in a place of rolling grasses and large landscapes, leaving him abandoned. Unfortunately, that place later turns out to be ... Latveria!
The battle between Red Hulk and Doom take the pair (and Devil) all the way from the Balkans to Vista Verde, where Red is joined by the rest of the Hulks. In the middle of the battle, a captive Leader tries to win his freedom with a Super-Villain Team-Up (remember that title? Doom and Namor?). Unfortunately, Doom neither knows who the Leader is nor cares.
Ending: Doom escapes, Devil is back at Vista Verde and Red Hulk is buried by the Dino – again! lol
I appreciate the character charm the toon makers try here, but a bit of seriousness would be appreciated, even in a Sunday morning toon. It’s just OK.
