TV Review: Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes - The Ballad of Beta Ray Bill (Season 2, Episode 8)

“The Ballad of Beta Ray Bill” on this Sunday’s Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes harkens back to those issues of Thor by Walt Simonson and his great creation of the Korbinite worthy enough to lift and even control Mjolnir, Thor’s Uru hammer.

On this rather concentrated version, Thor and his lady Sif -- who like in the books is angry at Thor for his ties to and constant whining about Midgard (and Jane Forster) – journey with Bill and his ship Skuttlebutt to free Bill’s people from stasis isolation and find them a new world.

In this animated reality, it is Surtur and his demons (in this episode under the control of a thrall Enchantress) who threaten the Korbinites. After some posturing by Odin and the creation by the Dwarf King of Stormbreaker, Bill’s own storm-bringing hammer, the cosmic pair (and Sif) confront the demons and, with the help of Skuttlebutt, defeat the enslaved Enchantress and the demon hordes.

While the fate of the Korbinites is still in question, Sif does not sail away with Bill this time but journeys back to Asgard with Thor, a little more mature now that she understands Thor’s commitment to “those mortal creatures.”

A fascinating look at a great chapter in the career of Thor and his adventures. One of the better Avengers: EMH to date.
