TV Review: Avengers Assemble -- "In Deep," Episode 13
In a delightful and action-packed episode of Avengers Assemble, Captain America and Iron Man – these days certainly the ying and yang of the team – disguise themselves as Grim Reaper and Crossbones and bring in “Iron Man” (empty armor) in order to infiltrate the Red Skull’s Cabal.
And it turns out to be a lucky thing, because the gathering of super-villains is growing by leaps and bounds. There are A.I.M. agents and Atlantean soldiers everywhere. Heck, even the absent Dracula is part of the Cabal; he is absent, but vampires are all around.
M.O.D.O.K. is walking around trying to give orders, and gets into a shoving match with Attuma over the ocean master’s weapon he has brought the Skull, a trident which houses “the power of Neptune.” Said power gets released and, of course, chaos ensues.
There is a lot of inside and outright humor here, including Hawkeye dressed as Cap trying to sound like the super-solider. (Hawkeye giving orders to Falcon as Cap: “… and their – what’s the old-timey lingo for? – locale.”)
The bedrock of this adventure, however, is Tony learning from Cap that there is sometimes need for a plan, while Cap learns from the scientist that sometimes it is necessary to act on your gut instincts.
“In Deep” is one of the most enjoyable episodes of this new iteration of the series.
