Back in June saw word that a Stargate Cinematic Universe is in development, but now there's bad news.

Empire spoke with writer/producer Dean Devlin who offers the Stargate reboot is not happening.

I'm guessing it's not a coincedence that talk of a Stargate Cinematic Universe took place right before the release of Roland Emmerich's Independence Day: Resurgence (Emmerich directed and co-wrote Stargate), and I'm also guessing it's not a coincedence that since IDR bombed, Stargate won't be happening. Regarding a Independence Day 3it's currently up in the air and might be a TV movie.

Here is what Devlin offered to Empire about the Stargate reboot:

“It looked good for a couple of months, but now it’s not looking so good,” Devlin said.  “There are just a lot of things that have to fire at the same time, and there was a moment where I thought it was all firing at the same time, and then it all kind of fell apart.”

The article notes Devlin mostly blames the the current system of moviemaking, where studios favor big numbers and the idea of a franchise without focusing on the product itself.

“It’s one of the reasons I prefer to work independently,” Devlin said. “Listen, I think if we did Stargate right, the fans would like it and we could do something really good. But if we screw it up, they’ll reject it. As they should. But I kind of don’t want to do it if I think that we’ll screw it up, and that’s one of the things that’s holding us back.”

The first Stargate was made independently, giving it a lot of freedom, which wouldn't be the case for the reboot as the rights are tied to various studios.

“You’d have several studios involved and a lot of voices and, you know, you may make something great, but you also may have something that doesn't resemble what you wanted to do," Devlin continued. "That kind of ‘collaboration’ is a terrifying aspect of the whole thing.”
