Star Trek 2 (2013): Now Benedict Cumberbatch Is Gary Mitchell?
It's been said that Cumberbatch is supposed to be Khan, Kirk's nemesis from the original series as well as the first Star Trek 2 movie.
Actually, Benicio del Toro was stated to be first up for the role of Khan Noonien Singh, but bowed out.
With Cumberbatch being the replacement?
Obviously, there is a bit of ethic difference between the two; however, as Abrams' Star Trek takes place in an all new Universe, I suppose anything is possible.
But now, the possible real character that Cumberbatch is playing may have been slipped by Karl Urban, Bones, to SFX Magazine, "He's awesome, he's a great addition, and I think his Gary Mitchell is going to be exemplary."
Fans of the original Trek will recognize that Lieutenant Commander Gary Mitchell, good friend to Captain Kirk, first appeared in the episode "Where No Man Has Gone Before," and was transformed into a god-like being who gained vast psionic powers and desired to rule over the human race. Mitchell's plans were eventually thwarted by Kirk.
So is Cumberbatch really playing Mitchell? It does seem highly unlikely that Urban would let this information slip as Abrams is known for running a tight ship. This could be a red herring, just as the Khan info could be. It could be revealed that Cumberbatch is playing a total different character -- or not.
In addition, it has already been stated that Gary Mitchell is not appearing in the movie by Robert Orci to JoBlo.com. Another red herring?
The as-of-yet unnamed Star Trek sequel has a May 17th, 2013 release date in 3D, is directed by J.J. Abrams and stars Chris Pine as Capt. James T. Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, Karl Urban as Leonard "Bones" McCoy, Zoe Saldana as Nyota Uhura, Simon Pegg as Scotty, Anton Yelchin as Pavel Chekov, John Cho as Hikaru Sulu and Benedict Cumberbatch as an unnamed villain.
