Body

With such a bloated and ever-changing cast of mutants (and then some), it is amazing how Peter David all these years has kept X-Factor fresh and moving, like a good adventure story with a bit of soap opera thrown in. If there is better chemistry to create a good comic book, I do not know what it is.

From the onset of her days in New Mutants, Rahne has been a very religious but kinda strange, out-there character (as many religious persons are portrayed, and actually seem in real life). David shows his consummate skill as a writer here by actually delving into his most complex (and sometimes boring and whiny) character to bring the fire out in Rahne and show what the inner turmoil she is feeling is all about.

In sum, this shows both the complexity of the character and the skill level of David as he succeeds quite nicely. I am sorry to say the art in the issue by Neil Edwards while competent just does not carry the weight of this particular story nor the tedious twist when Polaris tries to re-establish the rapport she once had with the Scottish redhead.

Not your average merry mutant adventure, but we are having enough of those in AVX. This is just a great character study and I would not mind seeing more of them, in the old Mighty Marvel Manner. Well done, Mr. David!
