The Gold Key Universe has a strong start as Turok: Dinosaur Hunter hit the stands Wednesday. However, I must say it was not what I was expecting.

I usually associate Greg Pak with a sense of the light-hearted, and I thought we would see some dino smashing in the tradition of the old Gold Key books. Instead, Turok is a deeply soulful study of a Native American youth, divorced from his tribe, who suffers for the sins of his parents.

Not exactly a “fun” read, but very involving and entertaining in its own way. For old schoolers, closer to Marvel’s Jungle Action with the Black Panther than DC’s A Larfleeze Christmas (or whatever that book was called).

I was very intrigued by where this was going, and am certainly excited by what I found within the pages and will return for #2.

One of the things I found is wonderfully beautiful storytelling art by Mirko Colak. The first splash page not only sets the tone for the book, but I would not mind having it framed and on my living room wall. Colak is wonderful with character studies, facial expressions and script-enhancing panel arrangements. The flow is magnificent!

I hope the other Gold Key books can follow suit. If so, Dynamite has a dynamo on its hands!
