Body

It is a shame Paul Jenkins will not be doing more Stormwatch scripts because his brief two-issue outing this month and last certainly shows he has an understanding of these characters and where Paul Cornell was headed with them, IMHO.

Not only does this “fill-in” get us down to brass tacks on both the surface of our world, the blue marble the cosmic covert crew is charged with protecting (uh, Earth), but also reveals a part of the Martian Manhunter’s past and some cosmic creatures that are welcome in this New 52 world. (You can only fight the Anti-Monitor and Brainiac so many times, right?)

I was impressed with the Engineer’s role as a leader – or at least trying to be, since it seemed the world and indeed the universe was going to hell in a hand basket on her watch. Jack’s maturity and control over his powers never ceases to amaze me, and it was especially poignant in #7 which led to some great conclusions in this issue.

While regular artist Miguel Sepulveda is missed, I have gotten used to the strong lines and guiding panel arrangements of Ignacio Calero and his inker Sean Parsons. (As a matter of fact, I hear they may be joining us on a more permanent basis in the future?) Their art here, especially with the character moments, was superb. And kudos to Peter Pantazis for not holding back the color palate. Let these cosmic critters shine, sir!

I am excited about Peter Milligan’s coming next issue and Stormwatch’s involvement with the Red Lanterns, something this reviewer suggested to Mr. Cornell early on.

But I would welcome back Mr. Jenkins and his pen anytime. Job well done, sir!
