Body

Free of both Avengers vs. X-Men and Journey into Mystery, New Mutants #44 takes our cast – and cosmic writing team faves Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning – where no one has gone before in their run: a great mysterious time bomb of a story!

Not that DnA’s run on this title has been anything but dependable. But, and this is a big but, they have been tying up loose threads from the past – and that is always a good thing, but it cannot be the sole reason of a comic’s existence – instead of forging toward the future.

With this issue, the reader muddles along with the rest of our Merry Mutants as we come to “Fear the Future”!

DnA tell a taught and tense tale of a threat so big it attracts the attention of Dr. Strange, Iron Fist and the Silver Surfer (see Defenders for more of these guys). We do not know what it is, but it is happening in 72 hours.

Leandro Fernandez as usual has great panel layouts, beautiful character designs and a wonderful look to his pages. The proof of his genius? The Silver Surfer eating pizza!!

New Mutants in all its incarnations has always suffered as being thought of as a Junior X-Men. That being said, this title seems ready right now to bust out of that mold.
