Review: Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Episode 3 "The Asset"
Did you think we would ever get an episode filled with espionage, an intriguing story, super powers and villains, and some great action?
Well we did with episode 3, "The Asset," for Marvel's Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.!
From the opening minutes, all the way to the closing, this is how every episode should be done!
We are introduced to a truck driver, who appears to be the typical CB talkin' trucker; however, we learn he is far from that as some cool tech is presented where it's quickly realized this is actually a SHIELD convoy. We then see some out of this world action in the form of a mysterious invisible power that takes out all the trucks to steals its cargo - Professor Franklin Hall.
Coulson and his team are quickly on the scene where it's realized the mysterious invisible power is gravity being controlled. Doing a little research into Hall's work leads to a connection to an old school mate of his, Peter Quinn, a brilliant and rich power-hungry entrepreneur who has found a new home in Malta, which just so happens to be outside the jurisdiction of SHIELD and everybody else. Hall has been "kidnapped" to complete something the pair first worked on 20 years ago, a new element that can control gravity with "gravitonium." Quinn quickly convinces Hall to come on board the project and to help complete it - or so it seems!
As SHIELD cannot directly intervene in the affairs of Quinn, Skye volunteers to infiltrate an investors' meeting taking place (as she technically isn't an agent). She punches a few buttons on her phone and manages to get an invite using her Rising Tide contacts. There she quickly introduces herself to Quinn where just as quick her cover gets blown! Credit to Skye, she doesn't panic, but uses her talents to convince Quinn she would jump ship from SHIELD and work for him. Actually, the viewer is unsure where Skye's loyalties lie, and for a minute it seems as if Skye just might switch sides. However, we see Skye is still loyal to SHIELD as she manages to plant a device that enables Fitz and Simmons to bring down a lethal radioactive field enabling Agents Coulson and Ward entry to the grounds.
Coulson locates Hall where he realizes the professor has switched sides. Well, Hall hasn't really done that as he plans on burying the gravitonium at the bottom of the sea so no one can abuse its power! Coulson can't let him do that as innocents would be killed and makes the tough decision to use Hall's own body as a catalyst to stop the chain reaction! We witness Hall's body plunge into the gravitonium!
The episode closes with the gravitonium being sealed in a top secret SHIELD vault; so secret that no one will know what is housed inside. The camera zooms in on the gravitonium where - we see an out stretched hand! Graviton is born!
Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. "The Asset" is by far the best episode to date. The acting is vastly improved; the characters are more relatable, and the overall story was much better presented than previous episodes. We were given further hints as to what may have become of Coulson, Skye and Ward's characters finally see some much needed development, and the team seems to be coming together.
There is hope for this series, yet!
