Review: Frankenstein, Agent Of S.H.A.D.E. #1

Demons, ghouls and evil spirits - beware!

The good guys have their own team of monsters, one lead by none other than Frankenstein himself! And together with his team of Creature Commandos - they will rid the DCU of those things that go bump in the night!

Jeff Lemire, the creator of last week's critically acclaimed sold out book, Animal Man, is back with another tale of terror in Frankenstein, Agent Of S.H.A.D.E. #1. A book that sees the veteran monster commando Frankenstein, newly teamed with a monster squad based on Hollywood's horror classics! Something has devastated a small northwestern town, seemingly swallowed up the good wife of Frank - and it's their job to discover the problem, save Mrs. 'Stein and clean up the mess.

However, Frankenstein is not just filled with a horrific element of shock and awe, but Lemire includes a heavy-handed amount of science fiction. And with this, we are introduced to Ray Palmer, the watchdog who brings with him his matter compression capabilities and knowledge. In addition, we are witness to the capabilities of and the mad science within.

Alberto Ponticelli is the perfect choice for a book that sees a visual blend of horror and sci-fi, with an added dash of a super hero esteem. Thick black inks coupled with revealing detailed panels gives the reader a sense of fear and revulsion - in addition to wonderment and amazement.

The book was a heck of a lot of fun; however, I do have one small gripe as Father Time is reborn - and sadly just doesn't kick-ass. Maybe, sometime soon, time will catch up and make him anew!

Be sure to pick this one up. I'll definitely be continuing with the series. You never know what might happen if you decide to pass this one up! However, if you do feel something creeping up your neck and your spine all a tingle, you know just who to call - Frankenstein, Agent Of S.H.A.D.E.!
