Body

Al Ewing does it. Rick Remender is making it popular again.

But no one integrates and utilizes existing Marvel history like Peter David. PAD has been doing it with different iterations of X-Factor for decades, and thank God for it.

In All-New X-Factor #3, the team have about half of a Roy Thomas issue as they take some downtime to try and figure out who they are beyond a corporate product. You have to wonder if any of our three heroes (thus far, at least) sees beyond the PR job Serval Industries is giving them. It is painfully obvious they ARE up to something, but I have a feeling this is gonna be a slow-brewing blend here. Let’s just hope it doesn’t have the longevity of “Hell on Earth War” because I do not believe I do.

The fine Marvel mixing comes along when PAD weaves in the plot threads from some past X-Men issues and the recent Gambit solo series into X-Factor. We come to the Thieves Guild, of which Gambit has taken control. This is gonna be fun, I feel it already.

I worry about Polaris. She is still not quite all there, but there seems some advantage to this in PAD’s weird working of things.

And poor Pietro. Even when it seems he has a great thing going (finally?), there is always something else. Maybe he should have stayed with his dad’s organization.

I cannot tell you how glad I am to be seeing a consistent presence in the art department here, and beautiful art at that. Carmine Di Giandomenico and colorist Lee Loughridge have certainly devised a unique feel and mood for this mutant book, not dark at all but light and airy, with its light greens and yellows. This is carrying the characters very well thus far, and sets it apart – as it always is – from the other X-titles. What great character renderings and action scenes. Carmine is what PAD needed back in the detective agency days.

I could not be more pleased with this relaunch and I thank Marvel for it. There is just something special about PAD and his corner of the mutant market.
