A new take on Wizard Of Oz is headed to SyFy from Timur Bekmambetov, the director behind the likes of Wanted and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.

In what is being described as a re-imagining of the classic story (via Deadline), Bekmambetov's take is said to be set in a post-apocalyptic future where a lone warrior from Earth gets transported to Oz meeting up with three more warriors, Heartless, Brainless, and Coward, in order to defeat the evil wizard that inhabit's the land.

The new mini-series will be executive produced and possibly directed by Timur Bekmambetov, with a writer being sought as well.

The original book, The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz, has been in the public domain since 1956.

There have been other versions of the story to hit television and the silver screen including the recent Oz The Great And Powerful prequel movie by Sam Raimi, the 2007 Tin Man mini-series starring Neal McDonough, the 1997 Oz tv series Return to Oz, and the 1978 movie The Whiz, which starred Michael Jackson.
