Pixels Post-Credit Scene Was Cut

I just got back from watching Pixels and loved the movie. If you are any kind of video game fan - young or old - you should find Pixels to be a barrel of laughs and tons of fun. There are lots of references to classic games as well as the 1980s, which old school gamers should find appealing, and the younger generation should find laughable, but interesting.

I expected a post-credit scene for Pixels setting up a possible sequel, but alas there was no "to be continued." It turns out there was a post-credit scene originally planned for the film, but it was cut.

The Pixels post-credit scene was to feature none other than Super Mario. Bros.; however, director Chris Colombus told Screen Crush they decided against it (slight spoilers follow).

We tried it. There was a moment we even did a previs of it, we thought it was interesting but we wanted to kind of use him somewhere else. I don’t want to spoil the fact that he maybe somewhere else in the film but … that ironically is a bigger moment for the audience than the ending with Mario.

I do have to say afte watching the movie, I much would have rather had Super Mario as the post-credit scene. There was really not much of a reaction when Mario was shown other than 'oh, there's Mario.' I think the post-credit scene featuring Mario would have been a lot more special.

Mario actually made it into the Pixels script as the post-credit scene, which was (via SlashFilm):

PAN UP AND SPIN AROUND, so we face the Washington Monument, damaged but still standing. When we reach the top, we see a small figure on top, hands on hips, watching all this from high above.

We zoom in on his face, and he smiles. CUT TO BLACK

"Pixels" is currently in theaters starring Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Michelle Monaghan, Peter Dinklage, Josh Gad, Brian Cox, Sean Bean, Jane Krakowski, Matt Lintz and Dan Aykroyd.
