No Smoking For NBC's Constantine; Might Not Have Cancer

In this day and age, this doesn't come to that much of a surprise as John Constantine won't be smoking in the upcoming NBC series.

Does that mean it will still be any good? We'll have to wait and see.

Neil Marshall, director on the pilot episode of Constantine, tells the Collider that the titular character won't be smoking, and that he is unsure about the cancer aspect.

Can John Constantine smoke on TV?

No we’re not.  It’s the one thing, a compromise I guess.  On network it’s the one thing you can’t smoke on network.  That’s one of his character traits.  We’re working around that.  We’re trying to get aspects of it in there as much as possible.  We’ll see.

Does he still have cancer of some type, can you say?

I have no idea where the story is going to go beyond the pilot, so I can’t answer that one.

In the pilot, does it make any mention of him having any kind of cancer?

No, it doesn’t.

Finding the correct tone and keeping the immense darkness of the character on NBC – not CW – primetime?

Hannibal is on NBC, and that’s pretty dark and disturbing.  Whatever the regulations are, you can be as dark and disturbing as you want and we’re going to go in that direction.  The intention is to be as dark and scary as possible with the show.  And that was our whole kind of plan going in, to make it scary.  So we’re going to explore all kinds of things.  But the smoking is very frustrating.  Who knows where it will go; where the story will go; where the character will go?  There’s still lots of options.

In the comics, Constantine's smoking and cancer were a big part of the series as the character is known for smoking as well as having lung cancer, which caused Constantine to get into more than one feud over his soul with demons from Hell.

Synopsis:

Based on the wildly popular DC Comics series "Hellblazer," seasoned demon hunter andmaster of the occult John Constantine (Matt Ryan, "Criminal Minds") specializes in giving hell... hell. Armed with a ferocious knowledge of the dark arts and his wickedly naughty wit, he fights the good fight - or at least he did. With his soul already damned to hell, he's decided to leave his do-gooder life behind, but when demons target Liv (Lucy Griffiths, "True Blood"), the daughter of one of Constantine's oldest friends, he's reluctantly thrust back into the fray - and he'll do whatever it takes to save her. Before long, it's revealed that Liv's "second sight" - an ability to see the worlds behind our world and predict supernatural occurrences - is a threat to a mysterious new evil that's rising in the shadows. Now it's not just Liv who needs protection; the angels are starting to get worried too. So, together, Constantine and Liv must use her power and his skills to travel the country, find the demons that threaten our world and send them back where they belong. After that, who knows... maybe there's hope for him and his soul after all.
