The BBC officially announces the new 12th Doctor Who, today, at 2pm ET on BBCA.

Set to air in about 40 minutes is the live special that will feature Matt Smith as well as the new Doctor.

Doctor Who Live: The Next Doctor will also feature interviews and extras.

Currently, just about everybody except their mom (sorry, no female Time Lords!) are being rumored to take over for Smith.

Some of the contenders said to be up for the 12th Doctor include: Peter Capaldi, Aneurin Barnard, Ben Daniels, Daniel Rigby, Paterson Joseph, with fans adding their favorites which include Benedict Cumberbatch, somehow the return of David Tennant, and a host of others.

We'll find out soon enough.

And for those wondering how John Hurt fits in, technically he isn't considered "The Doctor," as he gave up the name and precedes Christopher Eccleston by all accounts.

Update: BBC announced Peter Capaldi as the 12th Doctor Who (see a pics and video!).
