Marvel Launching The Cosmic Event We Always Wanted But Not The Way We Wanted It

5151 When you have the likes of Joe Quesada personally calling an artist to get them onboard a cosmic comic book -- you know the pigs are flying sky high.

Of course, it's all because of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige and Joss Whedon, and we're guessing nothing really about Quesada's input, as everyone who has been reading anything from Marvel for the past 10+ years knows Joe doesn't like cosmic.

It's even been said that during Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning's Guardians of the Galaxy run that the character of Jack Flag really represented Joe Q., as Flag would often quip how much he disliked the cosmic stuff. At least that was the inside joke amongst cosmic readers.

So when Marvel Comics cancelled DnA's stuff, and Joe Q. said it wasn't because of sales, he was telling the truth, it was because of movies, we shouldn't have found it a surprise that when the cosmic was brought back it was only "cosmic."

Iron Man. X-Men. Earth.

That's Marvel's new cosmic, which actually isn't new anything.

All it is, is the Guardians wrapped up in a neat little package with a nice Avengers bow tied to the top. So when the Guardians of the Galaxy movie does comes out, the Marvel Comics folk can make it look like they didn't ignore their cosmic stuff for years, and that the Guardians are an integral component to the Avengers, and of course Iron Man.

We all know better as Marvel Cosmic was regulated to their little own "universe" with barely any promotion -- and definitely not involved in any of the Marvel "big" events. Yet, they survived.

Well, the latest is that Marvel is planning a big "cosmic" event that begins in Jeph Loeb's Nova, which fans dub NINO (Nova In Name Only) and will continue in the new Guardians of the Galaxy comic book and involve the recently announced Thanos Uprising as well as into Age Of Ultron. It's being described by Bleeding Cool as being as big as Avengers Vs. X-Men (and we all know how good that turned out).

What's that you say? Ultron? Yep, DnA already did that in Annihilation: Conquest.

Obviously, we can see what's going on here. With Matt Fraction spilling the beans that the Marvel Studios movies have a direct influence on the comics and writers, we see that Marvel Comics is following along The Avengers movie with Thanos, Guardians of the Galaxy and into The Avengers 2.

I can only imagine the look on Quesada's face when he was told that the movies would be heavily cosmic.

Who knows though, that could have been shortly before Quesada gave up the EIC gig and moved on.

Basically what we are getting, is an inorganic story from writers who have no idea or would have never thought about diving head first into cosmic in the first place.

Instead of bringing the Annihilation era, which had a loyal and steady fan base of its own, into Marvel, they "axeled" it (as I like to say) and relaunched under their good buddies who will have gone on to get a movie credit.

Though underserving.

And I won't be buying it. Won't you join me?
