Iron Man 3 Friday Opening Nets $68.5 million; Trails Avengers & Dark Knight Rises
With Thursday's midnight debut not breaking any records, Iron Man 3 continues the trend domestically with a Friday opening of $68.5 million, which trails last year's The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2.
The Avengers opened to almost $81 million on its Friday debut, with The Dark Knight Rises scoring $75.7 million; Potter came in at $91 million.
It remains to be seen whether word of mouth is or will affect the performance of Iron Man 3 as reviews have been mixed (aside from the corporate website glowing reviews).
Iron Man 3 did exceptionally well overseas, even better than The Avengers movie, but U.S. audiences perhaps have already heard about certain questionable elements in the movie.
It also remains to be seen if Iron Man 3 has any staying power, as movie goers went to see The Avengers multiple times.
Even with the mixed reactions, Iron Man 3 is on pace for a $150 million opening weekend, which really can't be complained about, and would give it the 9th best opening ever. Should also be noted "estimates" said it was on track for upwards of $185 million, previously.
Question: Is Iron Man 3 a movie you would pay to see twice?
