Guardians of the Galaxy Owns Superman Man of Steel & Iron Man

We might know the reason Warner Bros. backed down from the May 6th 2016 release date for Batman Vs. Superman taking on Captain America 3, and that is because anything Marvel is pure gold.

Case in point: Guardians of the Galaxy.

Besides the rabid loyal readers of Cosmic Book News, not many movie goers - or for that matter comic book readers - were even familiar with the rag tag group of cosmic space heroes.

But despite the Guardians being so unknown, they have managed to take the top Summer slot at the box office as well as the best domestic gross of the year to date.

Guardians of the Galaxy has beat out well known franchises including Amazing Spider-Man, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Godzilla, Transformers: Age Of Extinction, and even the previous Marvel Studios movie, Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Now we can add another well-known franchise to the list - arguably the most well known of them all - with Superman, as Guardians of the Galaxy has just jumped past Man of Steel.

To date, Guardians of the Galaxy has a whopping domestic gross of $294.567 million. Man of Steel started out strong, but faded away with $291 million.

The worldwide gross for Guardians stands at $586 million, which sees the movie even pass by the 2008 Iron Man film, and puts it about $80 million shy of the Superman reboot.

Guardians of the Galaxy has also scored four top grossing weekends, which previously was done by The Hunger Games, followed by Avatar and The Dark Knight.

Director James Gunn commented on the success of the Guardians on his Facebook:

THANKS to you, ‪#‎GuardiansoftheGalaxy‬ is having it's FOURTH weekend at number one, which hasn't happened with any movie for over two and a half years. It happened last with the first Hunger Games and, before that, with Avatar and, before that, The Dark Knight. But those weekends were consecutive. With ‪#‎GotG‬ we were number one, lost it against TMNT, and then came back again due to so many of you spreading the word and seeing the movie again and again. I'm incredibly grateful to our fans and friends out there who have helped to make this movie something special, and ensuring we'll see more stories in the future with Quill and Gamora and Drax and Rocket and Groot. Now, here's a photo of some Knowhere miners who toil the day away mining for Celestial spinal fluid, but who still have a pretty good attitude about it as they took time to pose for this photo and 3/4 of them smiled. Much love!

Guardians of the Galaxy box office just passed up Iron Man, making us the biggest Marvel franchise-starter yet. And we still haven't opened in Japan, China, or Italy.

If I had a penny for every time someone said making a Marvel movie with a talking raccoon was dumb and that Guardians was going to bomb, I'd probably have just about the amount of money Guardians has made so far. So I'm glad I spent that time making a film instead of counting people and their opinions, because we're still going strong. Also, making the movie was a little more productive, and people seem to enjoy it. Not to mention that I would have had a difficult time collecting all those pennies, and the bank would have been pissed off at me when I tried to exchange them for large bills.

But, once more, YOU ALL are the ones who bought the tickets. We provided the material, but you took it into your hearts and made it a hit. So THANK YOU, and love to you all (even those of you from whom I'd otherwise be collecting pennies).

Marvel Studios has given Guardians of the Galaxy 2 a July 28, 2017 release.
