Following its monstrous Thursday night advanced screening debut, Godzilla has now taken the top prize for the best opening day in 2014 stomping both Captain America 2 and Amazing Spider-Man 2 in the process.

Godzilla opened with $38.5 million yesterday, which beat Cap 2's $36.9 million last month and Amazing Spiderman 2's $35.2 million a couple of weeks ago.

It's now stated that Godzilla is on track for close to a $100 million opening, which is much better than the initial $60-70 million that was first estimated.

As it stands, Godzilla has a 72% positive rating amongst critics at the review aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes, with 79% of audiences finding it favorable.

While the movie has generally been well-received, the biggest complaint amongst fans seems to be the lack of Godzilla in the movie, which actually isn't that bad of a complaint if there are sequels.

Godzilla cost an estimated $160 million to make directed by Gareth Edwards starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Bryan Cranston, Ken Watanabe and David Strathairn.

Update: It's now being reported that a Godzilla sequel has been confirmed.
