Doctor Who: Star Trek's Benedict Cumberbatch Rumored To Play the Master for 50th Anniversary

Next year sees the 50th Anniversary of Doctor Who, and with that it's being reported that Benedict Cumberbatch just may be playing The Master.

Cumberbatch, who is currently filming as the bad guy in Star Trek, also stars as Sherlock Holmes in the BBC popular series of the same name (minus the Holmes). The actor is also no stranger to being associated with Who, as Cumberbatch previously turned down the role to play the Doctor after David Tennant departed.

Now, 2013 could see the Matt Smith Doctor taking on "Sherlock Holmes!"

This info (rumor?) comes via the UK's Express, who states:

“It’s fitting that the Doctor comes face to face with his ultimate enemy, The Master, for the 50th anniversary and it’s felt Benedict is the perfect choice if schedules can work,” we’re told. “Fans will love the idea of the man who plays Sherlock Holmes taking on the Doctor’’.

Whovians will note that John Simm played the role of The Master, the renegade Timelord, versus Tennant's Who.

And it should also be noted that Steven Moffat is the showrunner for both Doctor Who and Sherlock.

The Express states that it is "likely," so hopefully we'll get a confirmation or denial soon.
