David Goyer Explains Why Zod And No Braniac In Man of Steel
As we have seen Zod previously in Superman films, and the fact that Braniac was planned in some of the defunct movies, David Goyer addresses the choice of the villain in Man of Steel.
Speaking with Super Hero Hype at a set visit, Goyer says the story that he and Christopher Nolan developed led to the use of Zod as well as the Kryptonians being the villains for Man of Steel.
The way (Christopher) Nolan and I have always approached the Batman movies as well is you never say, 'Hey, which villain would be cool for this movie?' You start with the story first. What kind of story? What kind of theme do you want to tell? So we worked that out. Then, usually the villain becomes obvious in terms of who's going to be the appropriate antagonist for that. When you guys see the movie, the only villain we could've used was Zod and the Kryptonians. I mean, when you see what the whole story is, nothing else would have even made sense, just like in the same way that nothing else would've made sense other than Bane in the other one. I mean, you let the story dictate who the right antagonist is rather than the other way around.
And regarding the villain, Lex Luthor, when questioned about the use of Superman's archnemesis in a potential Man of Steel sequel, director Zack Snyder wouldn't even go near it, and thanked SHH for the interview.
Man of Steel opens June 14th in IMAX 3D directed by Zack Snyder and starring Henry Cavill as Clark Kent/Superman and Michael Shannon as Zod.
