Fans on the forum ask, are extra-dimensional demons and other mystical beings really “cosmic”? Should Dormammu, Nightmare and others be included with the likes of the Silver Surfer, Quasar and Ogor? Or for that matter, should Zeus and Loki?

To them, I say, of course, because these off-worlders (in many cases) react and affect the lives of those beings we normally think of as cosmic (the Watchers, Celestials, etc.) and that makes up the fabric of not only Marvel Cosmic but Marvel Mystic and Marvel Mythic, which I just see as two wings of Marvel Cosmic.

See what I mean with our demon du jour, Asteroth!

In a desperate attempt to rid the universe of Beta Ray Bill and the remains of his people, the Korbinites, Stardust opened a portal to a cosmic hell dimension in hopes of banishing them there. Instead, a demon of tremendous power was set free to wreak havoc on the universe.

Asteroth, born from the chaos of creation, was able to remake the universe to her liking and then destroy it after she had her fun. Stardust told Beta Ray just how dangerous she was, but it was already too late for one planet that she destroyed after feeding off its energies.

Asteroth’s powers would grow with every feeding (shades of Big G!), and soon she would be almost unstoppable. Stardust and Beta Ray Bill fought the cosmic demon, but she was just too powerful for them. In a final effort to annihilate Asteroth, Stardust used her Power Cosmic to create a black hole so the gravity it produced would pull Asteroth inside, but even that did not faze her.

If not for the sudden return of a fully recovered, cosmically-charged Alpha Ray, Asteroth may have succeeded in killing the two beings that opposed her. Sacrificing himself, intending to eliminate Asteroth in the process, Alpha Ray forced her into the black hole along with Stardust.

Time passed and soon Beta Ray Bill found himself on what was left of the fabled city of Asgardafter the events of Ragnarok. He was in search of his lost meta-orb, the object that held the life forces of his people, but when he found it something had emerged from within. It was Asteroth in the body of a warped version of the Korbinite, and she was furious.

Asteroth had to implant her essence inside the orb before her body was crushed by the black hole, and she had to feed off the Korbinite spirits in the orb to regain her strength and come forth once again. No longer at the energy levels of a god, Asteroth claimed to be the equal of Beta Ray Bill and called herself Omega Ray to mock her rival.

Consumed by rage when he thought that he failed to protect his people, Beta Ray Bill unleashed the full power of his mallet, Stormbreaker, and killed Asteroth once again. (Nothing like the rare sight of Bill unleashed! We miss you, Walt.)

At this time, Asteroth’s taint has been seemingly erased from the universe, but it remains to be seen if she will rise again.
