Battlestar Galactica Online (MMO) Surpasses One Million Registered Players in Six Weeks
Bigpoint Adds New Ships – Viper Mark VII and War Raider – and Begins Moving Development to San Francisco Studio; Game Upgraded to Unity 3.3 for Improved Stability and Performance
San Francisco – April 15, 2011 – Bigpoint (http://www.bigpoint.com/) – the global market leader in browser-based massively multiplayer online games (MMOGs) – today announced that Battlestar Galactica Online (http://battlestar-galactica.bigpoint.com/) passed one million registered players in just six weeks, becoming the company’s most successful launch since its founding in 2002. Based on the internationally popular Syfy television series produced by Universal Cable Productions, Battlestar Galactica Online is a free-to-play, browser-based space combat MMOG that combines high-quality, 3D graphics with intense gameplay.
“There is always a risk when you translate a well-known IP into another medium,” said Heiko Hubertz, CEO and founder, Bigpoint. “We built what we believed was a recipe for success; a fantastic gaming experience inspired by an iconic show, with the added benefit of being a free-to-play title. We are grateful to the fans for their support and interest in this game, and pledge to continue to improve and optimize the game.”
Through 2011, Bigpoint expects the number of players in Battlestar Galactica Online to continue to grow as it ramps up its international marketing and partner activities. Unlike most online game companies, Bigpoint leverages a vast, global network of over 1000 distribution partners who publish games on their portals. Moreover, Bigpoint localizes its games into 25+ languages and incorporates over 150 payment solutions, which helps it attract players more than 250,000 new players every day.
Ongoing Development and Optimization
Effective April 6, 2011, Battlestar Galactica Online was upgraded to the latest release of the award-winning Unity game platform, Unity 3.3. This upgrade improves overall stability and enhances special effects and graphics. For example, all ships now feature crisper textures and reflection-based shaders that deliver high levels of detail.
In addition, Bigpoint continues to add new content, features, and polish to the game based on its development schedule and community feedback. In Battlestar Galactica Online, players can now experience several new human and Cylon ships in addition to the series' classic fighters: the Viper Mark VII, and the Cylon Raider. Additionally, new Cylon Tier 2 and Tier 3 ships have been added. Players can spend Tylium to acquire new ships, a valuable resource that can be mined, looted from defeated AI-controlled enemies, or purchased with Cubits – the game’s premium currency.
Currently in open beta, Battlestar Galactica Online was designed and produced by Bigpoint International and developed by Artplant (http://artplant.no), a Norwegian studio that specializes in MMOGs. Bigpoint is currently transitioning all design, production, and development to Bigpoint Inc. in San Francisco, the company’s hub for AAA development.
