For those readers who like the long story as I do, and even for those who do not, you get a little payoff for the small frustrations of Avengers #3 in this fantastically classy and cosmic origin story for the new Captain Universe in #6.

At once, you can make connections to previous issues of Jonathan Hickman’s Avengers with this story, and an understanding comes. You may be even more in-the-know if you read Warren Ellis’ newuniversal, but that will really come in #7.

Leave it to Hickman to use the much-ignored Shang-Chi just right as a tool to unlock the mystery of the African-American female now possessed of the Captain Universe identity. It all fits so perfectly together … until a surprise in the back seat flies into the storyline and then there are problems anew!

Now this is how I like my Avengers: powerful, slow and complex.

SUPERIOR Spidey rears his head this issue, calling Iron Man “Stark” and actually stealing poor Sam Guthrie’s special vitamin food! Raiding the icebox: now that is low! Great character moments here, but I would like to see Jarvis. Tony made a ref to him a while go and his presence would definitely work as a soother.

We also get a tad more on that mysterious code both the new Adam and Captain Universe seem to speak. And the new guy’s name is not Blackveil, like Stark thought, but something close … again, the New Universe should be your guide!

Hickman and the wonderful art of Adam Kubert are starting to rebuild a very lost faith in a vanished Marvel Cosmic. At least in Avengers, it seems wide-eyed, innocent, creative and mysterious …

Now this is how I like my Avengers!
